Research Partnerships

Screen Australia is the national funding agency for screen production, charged with the development, support and promotion of a highly creative, innovative and commercially sustainable Australian screen sector.

As part of its leadership objectives, Screen Australia plays an important role in providing authoritative research and strategic analysis. This includes examining factors that influence the production and consumption of Australian screen content and the role of the screen production sector in delivering the government’s cultural objectives.

The Research Partnerships Program is administered by Screen Australia’s Strategy and Research Unit.

Program focus

In order to most effectively leverage its contribution, the program is focused on partnerships with higher education researchers in Linkage Projects supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC).

Projects must align with Screen Australia’s strategic interests by exploring current issues and future challenges of audience development and business sustainability in the Australian screen sector.

Eligibility

Proposals must be from higher education researchers looking to work with Screen Australia as a Partner Organisation in an ARC Linkage Project. See www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/lp/lp_default.htm

Applicants must meet the general eligibility criteria set out in Screen Australia’s Terms of Trade, except that, with reference to clause 1.1.1, an applicant enrolled in a film, television or interactive digital media course at a tertiary educational institution is not ineligible.

Available support

Screen Australia may offer support in the form of monetary or in-kind assistance. There is potential for access to Screen Australia’s data and for data sharing.

Funds available are limited and dependent on other priorities. In some years, no external research projects may be undertaken.

Assessment process

Proposals will be assessed by a minimum of two people, with at least one being a staff member of Screen Australia. Industry specialists/peers may be used.

We will advise applicants of the success or otherwise of their application. Where an application is unsuccessful, the applicant will be advised of the reasons, with a written statement of reasons provided on request.

Screen Australia’s commitment is ultimately contingent on the project being accepted as a Linkage Project by the Australian Research Council.

Note that preparation of the Linkage Project Proposal itself, and its submission to the Australian Research Council by the due date, will be the responsibility of the applicant.

Assessment criteria

When assessing proposals for involvement in Linkage Projects, Screen Australia will take account of:

  • the alignment of the subject matter and focus of the proposal with the objectives of the program, and the current priorities and areas of interest arising from Screen Australia or from industry

  • the applicant’s qualifications and record of work

  • the originality of the research project

  • practical outcomes and opportunities for Screen Australia and its stakeholders to engage with these outcomes.

Terms of funding

  • Funding arrangements will be determined in each case based on the submitted proposal.

  • Funding is in the form of a grant and is not recouped by Screen Australia. Funding recipients will, however, be required to submit regular progress reports based on the outcomes set out in their proposal and according to their funding agreement.

  • Receipt of funding should not lead to any expectation of continued assistance from Screen Australia beyond the terms of the funding agreement.
