Screen Australia introduces new All Media Fund

Tuesday 3 May 2011

Screen Australia today announced the introduction of a new $3–5 million All Media Fund which encourages interactive or multi-platform innovative, risk-taking storytelling.

The fund was announced in conjunction with the release of the final Convergent Television guidelines which provide the television sector with $30-35 million to support quality Australian drama, children’s and documentary programming.

“It has never been more important to support Australian stories on Australian screens no matter how screen content is accessed or downloaded,” Screen Australia’s Chief Executive, Ruth Harley, said at the launch event at ACMI in Melbourne.

“Access, diversity and choice should be at the heart of the convergence debate and Australian stories are an important factor in this equation,” she said.

The All Media Program comprises two streams:

  • Digital Ignition, providing development support for innovative interactive projects (including games) with a strong storytelling component; and
  • All Media Production, providing production support for linear and non-linear (interactive) projects that push the creative envelope.

All Media Production includes funding for drama that pushes creative boundaries whether screened on television, online or on hand-held communication devices.

“All Media Production is platform agnostic and rather than a minimum licence fee, requires the attachment of a recognised and appropriate entity that will communicate the content to the public. In this way we hope to encourage traditional and new players to develop break-out programming,” said Dr Harley.

Digital Ignition provides development funding exclusively to interactive projects demonstrating a strong narrative. Projects can be as diverse as games, websites, apps, alternate and augmented reality, re-virtual worlds, MMORPG and interactive factual and drama.

The Convergent Television and All Media guidelines will take effect from 1 July 2011 and applications for the inaugural All Media round will close on 8 August 2011. A second All Media round will be offered in February 2012.
